Rufus Douglas Kelsey was born on January 29, 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama, to Cleophas and Louise White Kelsey. He was educated in the Birmingham public school system; graduating from Ullman High School. Rufus would go on and further his education at Tuskegee (Institute) University and Long Beach City College (California) before volunteering for service in the United States Army. He proudly served in the US Army for over 9 years before he was honorably discharged. In 1999 he retired from BellSouth (AT&T) after 31 years of service. After retirement Rufus would go on and become a call operator for transportation at UAB, an attendant for Westside Funeral Home and a volunteer for Camp Shiloh. Because of his faith and love for the church Rufus would serve in many areas such as choir member, trustee, deacon, and church treasurer for over twenty-five years. His loving survivors are: wife, Janice; children, Katrice (William) Murray, Jr., and Derrick (Zaneta) Kelsey; grandchildren, Andrew, Zachary, William III, Kayce, and Kelsey; brother, David (Maurine) Kelsey; other relatives and friends.
