Odet Salome Campbell Delaine was born on September 14, 1927 in Yantley, Choctaw County, Alabama to the late James “Jim” and Clora Portis-Campbell. Her early years of education were obtained at Maple Springs in Choctaw, Alabama; she would graduate salutatorian of the 1946 class from Kinterbish High School. She attended Alabama A&M and E. F. Young Beauty School. In 1948 she married Arvell “Knot” Delaine, Sr., and to this union, four children were born. She and her husband were the owners of Delaine’s Cafe’ and Hotel; they housed and fed out-of-town workers and civil rights activists in the 1960s. Mrs. Odet was the cafeteria manager at York West End High School for over 35 years until her retirement. She was an active and faithful member of Grants Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. She served in Sunday School, Missionary Society, Stewardess and the Usher Board. She was also the oldest member of the Order of the Eastern Star Brookins (Chapter #166). She would give you the food off her table and the clothes off her back. All who knew her would call her a mother and a friend. Her loving survivors are: devoted children; Arnetta Lucky, Arvell (Vrita) Delaine, Jr., Lenora Delaine-Brown and Quita (LLewellyn) Robinson, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
