Deacon Onnie Lee Smith, Sr. affectionately known as "Mr. Smitty" was born on December 1, 1934 in Calera, Alabama to Mr. and Mrs. George Alexander and Lizzie Kirkland Smith. He was educated in the Shelby County Public School System. He began working at an early age at Longview Lime Company (Dravo Carmeuse) where he remained employed for 55 years. He was united in holy matrimony to the former Ms. Naomi Russell on February 6, 1954, and for 57 years they enjoyed life together until Naomi's transition on March 23, 2011. He was a faithful member of New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Calera, Alabama (5798 Anglewood Lane 35040) where he served in the Deacon Ministry, Trustee Ministry and sang in the Male Chorus. Funeral Service will be Wednesday (June 30th) 12:00 PM at his beloved New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Calera Pastor Michael Jones officiating with interment in Shelby Memory Gardens Calera. His loving survivors are: devoted children; Minister Christine (James) Davis, Iris Maddox, Gary Smith, Jonathan Dale Smith, Sr. and Clifton (Kimberly) Smith, Sr., thirteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews,other relatives and friends. His remains will lie in repose on Tuesday (June 29th) from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Calera, Alabama. Westside Funeral Home Fairfield Directing.
