Lifelong resident of Calera, confessed Christ at an early age and joined New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church where he remained faithful until his health failed. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954. He worked for Saginaw Lime for 14 years, Glidewell Specialities Foundry, and ABC Rail/Naco until his retirement. His passions in life were fishing, being sociable, and traveling. He was married to Georgia Lee Smith Thornton of 56 years who preceded him in death. Two children, L.C. (Annie) and Geneva (James) Parker, preceded him in death also. His loving survivors are: children, Lucille Kirkland, Herman (Roxanne) Swift, George (Dorothy) Drake, Grace (Pastor Earnest) Norwood, Ethel (Bennie) Dixon, Cormelia (Gary) Lewis, Wanda (Timothy) Nix, Richard (Twalia) King and Robbin King; one brother-in-law Onnie Smith, Sr.; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; two nieces; four nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Service of Memory will be held Saturday, December 9th at 12:00 noon at New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church with burial in First Baptist Cemetery. Pastor Michael Jones officiating. His remains will lie in repose from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 8th at Westside Funeral Home Calera, the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.
